“An Institution is the lengthened shadow of one man”.
Madhavan has transformed Thomas Cook India since Fairfax acquired it in 2012. He took a 145-year-old company and grew it from $78 million in revenue and $14 million of profit before tax, to $948 million in revenue and an estimated profit before tax of $44 million. Thomas Cook India used to operate in 5 countries; it now operates in 29 countries.
He made many acquisitions, including SOTC, Sita, and Kuoni Hong Kong. Today, we offer travel destinations all over the world. A Thomas Cook trip is a trip of a lifetime. My friends and I have experienced the fantastic service that Thomas Cook provides.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “An Institution is the lengthened shadow of one man”. It certainly applies to Madhavan Menon. We will miss him and Lili greatly.

An Action Packed Journey!
Madhavan, and his days at Thomas Cook India, have been nothing less than an action packed journey, filled with rewards and challenges.
Each one dealt with the same amount of enthusiasm, honesty and honour.
His pride and joy … are every single one of his colleagues and co-workers, at every single level of the entire organisation.
At the home front …we are a small family filled with joy and pride for this tall man in our lives!”

An Inspirational Leader, a Hard Taskmaster, a Compassionate and Genuinely Caring Person.
It is always difficult to express all you want to say, when you have known someone for 25 long years. I met MM in early 2000. Given the choice, many of us, including me would avoid coming in the way of this young, fiery and dynamic person!
He may look tough, but when you get to know him really well, you will discover a soft core inside. He is the reason, I met my wife Jeni. He enjoys taking all the credit for that and rightly so! I should also mention he got me some good vices too….cheers to that!
Apart from being a task master, Madhavan is a person who will always take keen interest in your family. He will never fail to ask about them, and will stand by you in case of any need– day or night! He has touched many hearts, I know this from my own personal experience, and I will always be grateful for that! He is truly a compassionate and genuinely caring person.
On the work front, Madhavan is an inspirational leader, with a never-say-die attitude. Most importantly, he will always have your back and give you the confidence to go out and achieve more. Something rare and valuable.
He will be missed, but I have a deal with him, and that is – he will be on my speed dial and will pick up my call whenever I need to chat with him. Knowing Madhavan once a deal is agreed, it stays that way!
I feel very fortunate I got to spend 25 long years with him. I am sure his family will look forward to having more of him in his retired life!
My best wishes and gratitude always, Madhavan.

A Tribute to Madhavan— Executive Chairman, Mentor and Friend.
As Madhavan Menon approaches his well-earned retirement, it is difficult to put into words the depth of gratitude and admiration I feel — not only on behalf of Private Safaris, but from me personally.
Appointed by Madhavan in the wake of the global upheaval caused by COVID, I was given not just a role, but a renewed sense of purpose. His unwavering belief in me at a time of uncertainty will forever remain one of the most meaningful moments in my career.
But Madhavan has been far more than an Executive Chairman. He has been a true mentor — wise, patient, and always present with thoughtful guidance. In every conversation, he brought clarity and calm, always steering us with conviction, integrity, and that signature wit, that made even the toughest days a little lighter!
To me personally, he has also been a fellow foodie and wine enthusiast — someone with whom I could not only strategize, but also savour great meals, laugh over family stories, and debate the merits of a good life. These moments of connection are memories I will cherish long after he hangs up his boots.
For Private Safaris, he has been our rock. Through challenging times and triumphs, his steady leadership has anchored us and helped shape the resilient, proud company we are today. His legacy is not only in the results we have achieved but in the people he has nurtured and inspired — myself proudly among them.
Madhavan, thank you for your wisdom, your generosity, your humour, and your heart. We will miss you dearly at the helm, but your presence will always echo through the culture and spirit of this company.
I wish you a retirement filled with family, good food, excellent wine, and the joy of knowing just how much of a difference you have made.
With deepest respect and gratitude,
Gini

But what truly sets him apart is his joie de vivre—a zest for life that brought energy into every room, every meeting, and every meal that we enjoyed together!
Madhavan, thank you for your all that you have taught us over the years. You retire with our admiration, respect, and heartfelt gratitude.

Envisioning the Bigger picture
I am a bit sad to see Madhavan leave into retirement since I have enjoyed working with him very much. He is a visionary. A visionary who not only sees the bigger picture but who understands what it means to turn vision into reality. I have enjoyed conversations with Madhavan on matters that I am involved in on a daily basis but which he had to learn from scratch, and was amazed on how quickly he understood the essence and context of such subjects. His advice was invaluable and guided me in taking decisions that were of crucial importance. He has a gift that not many people have, and that is to guide people along a new path even if the destination is not clearly known, to give support and encouragement also in tough times, and quite simply to just to be there for you. I have also enjoyed the times of just sitting down with him over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine without an agenda, and contemplate to change the world. I wish him only the very best for his future, a happy life surrounded by his loving family, and for him to do the things he always wanted to do but had no time for. That starts with a relaxing stay in Thailand with the mobile phone turned off. All the best Madhavan and thank you for always having been there for me and my team.

Words of Assurance for Me and My Team
I have had the honour and privilege of having Madhavan Menon on my board at Sterling, and working closely with him during our transformation stage, for the last 4 years. What I am stating about him, is something, I have mentioned to him as well.
I shall never forget the words he told me when I took over as the MD & CEO of Sterling Resorts.
“Stay focussed, and do what it takes to turn Sterling around. We are solidly behind you”.
I can’t thank him enough for those words of reassurance that gave me, and my team, the zest and courage to do the same. Thank you, Madhavan, for your leadership and for your timely intervention and advice, whenever I needed it

I have many fond memories working with Madhavan. A few that stand out include:
- His kindness and compassion from the first day we met. It was something very special. He would always ask how I was doing, as well as enquire about my wife and children. He truly took a keen interest in our lives outside of work.
- He really embodied the guiding principles of Fairfax especially being a team player, working hard but not at the expense of our families. He made everyone feel they were an integral part of the organization. His leadership, personality and management style made you want to work even harder because he made everyone in the organization feel valuable.
- His compassion and understanding during the Covid crisis was something I will never forget. He would make a point to check in with us often, and reassure us that everything would be ok. He urged us to just focus on taking care of our families and stay healthy.

Leadership, Laughter, and a Legacy That Will Stay With Us
As we take a moment to reflect on the journey we have shared with our Chairman, Madhavan, it’s hard not to feel a mix of gratitude, respect and sadness, as he steps into retirement. Over the past seven years, we have had the honour of working alongside someone whose impact has gone far beyond titles and job descriptions.
When Thomas Cook acquired the Kuoni DMCs, and Madhavan took the reins, he brought more than leadership – he brought vision, integrity, and a quiet confidence that guided us through both exciting highs and challenging times. From day one, he led by example. Steady, when things got tough, sharp in strategy, and always focused on doing what is right – not just what is easy.
But what we will remember, just as much as his leadership, is who Madhavan is. His humour lightened up many tense meetings. His stories – usually over a great meal or a glass of wine – made us feel more like family than colleagues. He has been a mentor, a sounding board, and a consistent source of support to so many of us, whether in the boardroom or in everyday moments that mattered.
One of the clearest examples of his unwavering commitment came during the pandemic. While the world shifted, and so much felt uncertain, Madhavan remained a constant – calm, present, and focused. His leadership carried us through, and his belief in the team gave us strength when we needed it most.
He has made countless sacrifices – travelling long distances, spending time away from loved ones – just to stay close to his team and partners. Yet he never lost sight of the importance of family, showing us that true leadership is about balance, empathy, and showing up for people in every way that counts.
Madhavan, you have brought out the best in all of us. You have shown us that leadership is just as much about people as it is about performance – and that success is even sweeter when it is shared. You have helped us grow, brought us closer together, and created a legacy that will stay with us for years to come.
On behalf of all of us at DMS Middle East, thank you – for your wisdom, your humour, your incredible work ethic, and most of all, for the kindness and authenticity you brought into everything you did.
Congratulations on your retirement. May this next chapter be full of all the things you love – great food, fine wine, meaningful moments, and well-earned peace.
With deep appreciation,
–Peter Payet— MD & CEO Desert Adventures & Gulf Dunes
On behalf of the DMS Middle East Team

A remarkable Presence Who Led by Example, with Grace and Grit.
I remember it as clearly as a needle dropping on Vinyl. April 9, 2017. Sitges, a coastal town in Spain. A common friend’s wedding. That’s where I first met Madhavan – not across a boardroom table, but at the DJ console, where I had unofficially taken charge of the night’s music. His fond memory of that evening of rhythm and revelry led to a very different kind of exchange a year later on a flight. A chance 30-minute conversation with him turned into the beginning of a new journey for DEI. What began as a high-altitude chat evolved into a deep understanding of leading with clarity and compassion.
His true test as our group Chairman & MD, and DEI’s majority shareholder was demonstrated during the pandemic. He was the voice of calm in the world of uncertainty, reminding us that we’d come out stronger, together. It wasn’t just strategy. It was humanity. He stood beside us, inspiring us to focus on comebacks rather than setbacks.
Since then, the “staunch taskmaster” in him has brought the kind of structure and governance that helped DEI mature. His sharp thinking and decisive nature have built the foundation for something much bigger. Not just as a business, but as individuals.
Normally, he is the one setting the tempo in boardrooms, but when I indulge him for late-night shenanigans, I got to see him let loose—literally! Lili still jokes that I turned the most serious guy into a bit of a party animal. 😁
For me, Madhavan has been more than a shareholder or leader. He’s been a turning point, a mentor, and above all, a remarkable presence who led by example, with grace and grit

Trust and Encouragement from an Inspirational Leader
Mr. Menon, your ability to distill what is relevant and provide trust and encouragement to both Teh and I in Australia is greatly valued. You have the mark of an inspirational leader.
The tales you share about your family reveals your proudest role as a partner to Lili, a father and grandfather. You delight in showering love on them. How you interjected while your granddaughter was being reprimanded. All you did was to lower your newspaper, cast the adults a look, that was enough to set them straight. How you allowed yourself to give out treats despite protests from your daughter. You will always be their hero. Enjoy your time with them all.
We wish you an exciting and rewarding journey ahead. You have unfinished business here in Australia so when Lili and you are ready give us a hoy.

Perception, Intuition and Instinct!
It seems like yesterday when I first met Madhavan way back in 2012, at the Bombay Gym.
It was after a badly botched up HR interaction previously, and I was not sure I wanted to join the company.
But after meeting Madhavan – and a wonderful conversation (where he claims I interviewed him!) I was convinced Thomas Cook was calling.
Over the many years since (by far my longest stint professionally), Madhavan has been at various times father figure/big brother, mentor/guide/boss – but at all times, supportive and most importantly, a very perceptive friend – who would pick up intuitively when I was down and reach out instinctively – to cheer me up and get me back on track.
All the best Madhavan – I am betting you won’t be able to stay still after retirement, and I am looking forward to staying in touch.

Your tireless work ethic, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment have not only shaped our company’s growth but also inspired countless individuals, including myself.
Your legacy will live on through the impact you’ve made, the lives you’ve touched, and the lessons you’ve imparted. I am honoured to have worked alongside you and grateful for the opportunity to celebrate this milestone.

It Has Been a Lovely Journey
Madhavan recruited me in 2012, and it has been a lovely journey with him.
There have been many learnings for me personally, as well as professionally.
A few are below!
- Take everyone along… it took me few years to understand the importance of that.
- Have a work life balance…. The office is also a family.
I will miss him a lot especially, at the lunch table!
I wish him all the best for this new phase of his life.

A Burst of Energy!
My first encounter (please note the use of words!) with Madhavan was back in the Autumn of 2008, when I entered the hallowed precincts of the D. N. Road Office for my interview. I was waiting at the lift when I noticed that people around me were suddenly standing at attention. And then He walked in, clad in his trademark banker’s suit, nodded at people, and frowned at me. I knew who he was, as I had done some checks on the TC website, and said a quick good morning. He gave me this quick once over and nodded, thinking this apparition in a jacket must be a passing visitor. Little did I, or for that matter he, know that I would spend half of my working life with him. Though he might have some regrets –– I don’t!
For me, Madhavan is a body of pulsating energy. A burst of that energy can warm you up, shake you up, or even burn you, unless you are careful. He is a vibrant personality, a man who lives with, and for, his people. He knows how to reach out to his staff and charge them up, making them give their best for the organisation. At the same time, he is one of the most humane leaders I have seen, with a softness nestled inside his tough exterior – like a pearl in an oyster. To me, he will always be the one whom I will approach if I really need help, or even just a word of advice. And, by the way, I must thank him for getting me to develop the taste for black coffee!
Thank you Madhavan, for the fantastic times we have had. Wish you glorious times ahead!

Madhavan Menon – a Leader, a Legend, a Luminary!
An individual whose exceptional leadership qualities and accomplishments have earned him widespread admiration and recognition across the industry. Madhavan is a visionary who has not just inspire,d but also empowered, many to achieve great landmarks.
For me personally, Madhavan has many roles and meanings! When I look back, I reflect and recall going all the way back to 2008, when my journey started in Thomas Cook. Vivid and heart-warming memories come gushing in. The first visit to the D. N. Road office, up close with MM, and in just about 60 minutes, the decision to join TC, and Madhavan, was made. Since then there has just been no looking back!
Madhavan has been my mentor, my coach my guide.
In the initial days, he used to guide me and join me on sales calls. What fun! His passion was real, and his exuberance was infectious. His balance in drawing the real picture in front of the client would scare me, but we always won!
As many who know him well, would admire MM’s hawk-eye-like observation and precision. He knew exactly what was missing in a ppt, and would correct you for that. Not just missing links in presentations, he could also catch your energy. He knew when you were missing the vibe, and would genuinely care and help you get out of it.
I have really shared a very special bond with MM. Our connection was like that of buddies, and I loved his morning messages on my chat saying – ‘What’s up Buddy!’
Our conversations had so much of everything in them – From guidance to “beep@#%” words. Sometimes I would wondered what he would do next … rap me on my knuckles?
But through these no-filter conversations, he always used to pull me up and make me walk that extra mile, beyond my potential!
He was always guarded against my extravagances and irrational urges to splurge, especially when it came to cars. He made me drop many of my purchases, coaxing me to save up. He gave me no choice. Who does that?
I can never ever forget, how Madhavan held my hand when my dad left me. He has been my father figure in the true sense, and I have always looked up to him. His wife Lili has told me several times, that Madhavan treated me like his son Shankar, and there was just no difference in how he dealt with both of us. This really means a lot to me, and has touched me in many different ways.
Tremendous integrity, courage, compassion, and resilience , he embodies all these and more.
Madhavan has many meanings in my life. To me he was Thomas Cook personified. That will always remain.

Privileged to Know Him for 20 Years
As I reflect on the remarkable journey of our Chairman, Madhavan, I am filled with a mixture of emotions on the occasion of his retirement. Having had the privilege of knowing him for the past 20 years, I can confidently say that , for me, he will never truly retire. His infectious energy will continue to inspire us all.
Madhavan’s strong willpower is a trait that has always impressed me, he achieves what he dreams for the company with unwavering determination. His discipline, particularly in maintaining a healthy routine, is something I have always admired and learned from.
One of his most remarkable qualities is his ability to bounce back from challenges, navigating tough situations with ease and poise. We all saw it recently during COVID, and the group has come out stronger than what it was. Having Madhavan at the helm has been like having a protective umbrella over our heads, shielding us from the storms and uncertainties that come our way. He has been instrumental in steering the Group through numerous challenges, and his leadership has been a beacon of stability.
I am personally grateful for the opportunities he has provided me within the company over the last two decades, and I appreciate his sharp observational skills, which enable him to pick up subtle cues, and bring a fresh perspective to the table. As Madhavan embarks on this new chapter, I wish him immense success and happiness. His legacy will continue to inspire us, and I have no doubt that he will excel in whatever he chooses to pursue next. We are going to keep on going back to him for his guidance and advice!

More Than a leader, a True Professional Who Revolutionised the Travel Industry
I am honoured to pay tribute to the man who revolutionized the travel industry and left an indelible mark on my professional journey. As my boss, mentor, and “Guru,” Madhavan, you have been more than a leader – a true professional father.
Our paths crossed in 2006 when I transitioned from Cox & Kings to Thomas Cook. My bold request to meet you, the esteemed owner, showcased my passion and drive, even if it was fuelled by youthful aggression!
Our first meeting in 2006 was filled with anxiety and curiosity. I was eager to learn from the legend I had heard so much about. We discussed my business experience at Cox & Kings, and future prospects. Your words, “We will look after you, Rajiv…we will respect your seniority,” gave me immense comfort. That conversation marked the beginning of an incredible journey with Thomas Cook, and I can proudly say my career trajectory here is thanks to your trust and guidance.
Working under your guidance, I learned the nuances of a professionally run organization, contrasting with my earlier experiences in owner-driven setups. Your leadership, vision, and mentorship shaped me into the professional I am today.
During the challenging years of 2008-2009, amidst the global economic downturn, you demonstrated exceptional leadership. Despite constraints, you supported my growth plans, sanctioned hiring, and empowered me to build the MICE business.
Our journey together saw a remarkable growth in the MICE business from ₹14 crores to ₹70 crores in 2007, and ₹99 crores in 2008. Your leadership and trust in me was evident when you chose me for the Managing Director’s Award in 2009. That recognition filled me with great joy and pride.
Your trust and vision paid off as we grew our business to ₹135 crores. Your recognition of my efforts, promoting me to Chief Operating Officer, and a member of the Execom in 2011. and making MICE a separate P & L, showcased your commitment to innovation and growth.
As the years went by, we achieved remarkable milestones, including crossing ₹500 crores, and ₹750 crores. Madhavan, you continued to encourage me to aim higher, and in 2023, with Meera and her team’s dedication, we surpassed all expectations achieving ₹1060 crores in the MICE business.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Madhavan your leadership and support were invaluable. You showed genuine concern for my well-being and my family’s health, calling my wife and son, to check on us. Your vision for integrating Thomas Cook and SOTC’s leisure travel businesses was a game-changer, and I was proud to be part of the team that made it happen.
I’m proud to have played a role in structuring the integrated organization under your guidance, along with Mahesh and Vishal’s support. Working alongside Romil, Neeraj and others, we overcame challenges, survived, and revived.
Madhavan your “infinite mindset” philosophy taught me to strive for excellence and make a lasting impact. He would tell me every year on December 31st that the year was over, and everything comes down to zero, encouraging me to start fresh and aim higher!
The moment I will forever hold in my heart is when you lifted me onto your shoulders in front of my team in Jaipur – a gesture symbolizing trust, pride, and responsibility. It was a surreal experience, reminding me of the weight of expectations, and the importance of living up to your faith in me!
Suddenly, one day in February, you asked to meet me in person, to break the news that you were going to retire by 31st May. It was unbelievable and shocking for me. But I accepted it, as I knew it was the best decision for you, leaving the organisation at its pinnacle.
Madhavan, I am sure you will live life infinitely, having created history in the travel industry. Thank you, Madhavan, for being an exceptional leader and mentor. Your legacy will continue to inspire generations. I will always be indebted to you.
Your impact on my life and career will always be remembered.

Madhavan Always Backs His Team.
I had a situation once where I had taken a tough stance against a corporate for what I thought was poor behaviour on their part. They sent in a complaint to Madhavan about me. However Madhavan fully backed my stance and in fact asked the corporate to apologise.
So this shows that MM will back his team doing the right thing. That is the kind of person he is!

An Ode to the Master
An amazing chronicle closes, a new one unfolds
Many years of service, many stories told;
The suit is hung, the tie laid down,
A new day breaks, with freedom all around.
The travel from home, the grind and the stress
Give way to free mornings, calm and blessed;
Time for grandchildren, for hobbies and play,
A chance to discover oneself in a new special way!
Recollections of good times, friends and colleagues dear,
Of challenges and victory, in lands far and near.
A legacy remains that will last forever
And the memory of his presence, which will fade never !
As he steps down, our hearts swell
With gratitude, for he led so well.
A legend in travel, rare and true,
Mr. Menon — we were blessed to work with you!
Thank you Mr. Madhavan Menon

Always Connecting with the Team!
I have known MM since 2013, and have worked closely with him. I would like to share some of the valuable things I learnt from him.
When working together, there were days when things were not going as per plan, or certain initiatives you tried had failed, or perhaps targets were not met. At such times, I felt there was a gleam in his eyes, and he seemed almost happy that I had failed. When I asked him about it, he smiled and told me character is built on failures. All you have to do is keep the right intent, be consistent and resilient. I will never forget those words and I have inculcated this as part of my leadership style, and passed it on to my team as well.
I am going to miss his walks across the office. He used to achieve a lot during these walks .
- Keep connect with the team, as he would stop and speak to various people, talking about the office and personal matters too.
- These walks helped him build personal contacts.
- He would quickly understand what was happening in your respective business (high level).
- He would guide you on what could be done next, and share his experience.

Twenty-Five Glorious Years of Working with You!
Dear Mr. Menon,
I wish I could somehow prolong this goodbye ….
This is truly an emotional and difficult moment for me — after 25 glorious years of working with you!
Your mentorship has been most invaluable to me, something I will treasure for a lifetime. Watching your journey from Executive Director – Foreign Exchange, to Managing Director, then Chairman & Managing Director, and finally Executive Chairman, speaks volumes about your remarkable contribution not just to our organization, but to the entire industry.
It has been both an honour and a privilege to work alongside you. What stands out most about you is your rare and beautiful combination of being tough on the outside, yet warm and approachable on the inside — just like a tender coconut! You’ve been a guiding force not only for me, but also for Anil and Ansh.
You have always been an inspiration. We are all going to miss your presence, your energy, and your signature style of darting from one conference room to another — not to mention your ever-prompt email responses, and attention to every little detail.
Now, as you embrace this new chapter, may you truly enjoy the freedom to do all the things you’ve always wanted to. You have worked so hard — this is your well-deserved time to unwind, recharge, and create something beautiful and new with your family!
With heartfelt gratitude and warmest wishes,
—Lakshmi Soni—Executive Assistant to the Executive Chairman

As Editor of our company magazines — Tidings and Pulse — for 44 years, I have had the privilege of witnessing your remarkable journey first-hand, dear Madhavan.
- I was there when you joined us as Executive Director – Foreign Exchange on 2nd May 2000.
- I was there when you became Managing Director in January 2006.
- I was there when you rose to Chairman & Managing Director in 2016.
- I watched with proprietary pride when you became Executive Chairman of the Thomas Cook India Group, its subsidiaries, and Chairman of the Fairfax India Charitable Trust in 2023.
- I watched, as under your leadership, Thomas Cook India evolved into a formidable Group.
- I watched you steer the company through its darkest hours during Covid — motivating the staff, offering reassurance, and spreading confidence and positivity.
- I watched you bring it back — recovered, re-energised, and rising to great heights again.
- I watched you uplift and inspire the people — urging them to go the extra mile, understanding their struggles, consoling them when needed… always a people’s person.
And through all these 25 years — YOU watched over US.
I have had the honour of recording it all — capturing the highs and lows, chronicling the rich heritage and enduring spirit of Thomas Cook India.
You are an indelible part of that history, Madhavan — and always will be.
This is not the end, but the beginning of a beautiful new chapter.
Godspeed Executive Chairman… and dear friend!
