One question people ask me frequently, after my recent trip is: “Is this really the right time to travel, given the geopolitical uncertainties around the world?”
My answer is simple: travel wisely, travel responsibly and stay informed—but don’t put life on hold.
The world has always faced uncertainty—economic crises, political tensions, conflicts and pandemics. While certain regions may temporarily become unsuitable for travel, there are always safe and welcoming destinations waiting to be explored. If one part of the world is affected, look elsewhere. Waiting endlessly for the “perfect” time to travel could mean postponing experiences that enrich our lives and create lasting memories.
My recent leisure visit to Almaty and the Kolsai Lake region of Kazakhstan reinforced this belief. It also convinced me that Central Asia could offer a compelling alternative to more traditional European itineraries.
Discovering Kazakhstan
Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, sits at the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains. Known as the “Apple City”, it has wide boulevards, cafés and public spaces that give it a distinctly European feel—without the crowds and high costs of many European destinations.
What makes the region particularly interesting is the diversity of its landscapes. Within hours, one can travel from dramatic canyons and almost “space-like” terrain to alpine lakes, grasslands and mountains. The Kolsai and Kaindy Lakes, Charyn Canyon and Shymbulak ski resort offer something for nature lovers, families and adventure seekers alike.
But Kazakhstan is not only about scenery. Almaty offers a lively café culture, a young population and an efficient, aesthetically interesting metro. We also attended a ballet at the historic Abay Opera & Ballet Theatre—my first-ever ballet experience—and we were completely mesmerised!
There were memorable cultural moments too. My fellow traveller Hemali and I even found ourselves playing the role of parents-in-law in a small traditional wedding ceremony, welcoming the bride!
English is not widely spoken there. Vegetarian food requires advance planning.
For this reason, I believe a well-organised, guided tour can make a significant difference—particularly for Indian travellers. English-speaking guides, carefully planned itineraries and suitable food arrangements can greatly enhance the experience.
For younger travellers, Kazakhstan also has plenty of appeal: adventure activities, dramatic landscapes, lively city spaces and excellent opportunities for photography and drone footage.
A Destination Worth Discovering
For the Indian market, Kazakhstan and other Central Asian destinations offer considerable potential—particularly for travellers seeking something new, less crowded and more affordable than traditional European holidays. A combination of Kazakhstan, Georgia and Azerbaijan could even create an interesting “New Europe” itinerary.
My journey left me convinced that Kazakhstan offers a fascinating combination of spectacular natural beauty, modern city life, adventure and cultural depth—at a significantly lower cost than many established destinations.
The world may never feel completely certain. So, stay informed, be sensible and choose your destinations carefully.
But if one part of the world is facing uncertainty, perhaps the answer is not to stop travelling—but simply to look elsewhere.
Adjust your plans, not your aspirations.
And as for Central Asia? It may no longer be “emerging”.
It is arriving—and perhaps the time to discover it is now.
