We caught up with her to ask about her\u00a0journey with the &#8220;Tidings&#8221;, and what the transition to \u201cPULSE\u201d means to her.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>When you say you have been the Editor of the \u201cTidings\u201d almost from the beginning, how long would that be?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 1981, I was approached by Mr. K.B. Sarwal, Senior Director, Thomas Cook, through my friend Gita Choksi, General Manager-Inbound Tours and Conferences, to \u2018fill in\u2019 temporarily as Editor for the magazine, since the previous editor had left after just one issue. Because it was just a Quarterly, I reluctantly agreed, on condition that it was as a free-lancer, as, with young children, I did not want a full time job. That was 35 years ago\u2026 and I am still here!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Your association with Thomas Cook must be a strong one, since you are still with us!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Indeed, it has been a long and very happy association. Although I am technically not an employee, I have always been considered \u00a0very much a part of the Thomas Cook family. I am fiercely loyal to the company and take proprietary pride in all its achievements. Here, I must express my gratitude to <strong>Madhavan <\/strong>whose encouragement and appreciation has kept me going in spite of difficult deadlines and juggling home commitments! I also have super support and guidance from <strong>Abraham <\/strong>and my <strong>Editorial Board<\/strong>. They are always there to watch my back! <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">None of this would have been possible had it not been for the constant support \u00a0of my husband\u00a0<strong>Aspi,\u00a0<\/strong>and all my children. They understood my commitment to the magazine and tolerated\u00a0the times when I had to give it precedence, specially when tryng to meet deadlines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Tell us a bit about the background.\u00a0 What was it like in those days?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_683\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-683\" style=\"width: 284px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-683 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/pulseonlineco.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/11\/dsc08190.jpg?w=680\" alt=\"dsc08190\" width=\"284\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pulseonline.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/dsc08190.jpg 3103w, http:\/\/pulseonline.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/dsc08190-300x236.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pulseonline.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/dsc08190-1024x807.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The first two 4-page \u00a0black-and-white issues&#8211;1981!<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The \u201cTidings\u201d started off as a 4-page newsletter printed in black-and white, using the <strong>Letterpress <\/strong>technique of\u00a0<strong>relief printing<\/strong>.\u00a0 Being the pre-internet era, I started out typing each manuscript on an old manual Remington typewriter, then upgraded to an Olivetti electric one. In days when \u2018cut &amp; paste\u201d didn\u2019t come in a \u2018drop-down menu\u2019, we used scissors and glue to make the dummy for the press to copy\u2026. A laborious process!\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Later, when computers invaded us, we learned to \u2018think\u2019 in \u201cWord\u201d, what excitement there was when the company could afford its <strong>first coloured edition<\/strong>! Along with the company, the &#8220;Tidings&#8221; has grown in size and stature through the years. \u00a0It has received recognition winning\u00a0an ICE Award for three consecutive years, and also an ABCI award, when it was in print. (You can see me proudly clutching one in the picture!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>What were some of the mile-stones along the way, some stand-out moments?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The \u201cTidings\u201d was always a harbinger of good news, and past issues consistently\u00a0chronicled important events\u00a0which became a part of the history of the Company. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some highlights:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1983<\/strong>: One remembers the excitement when, on the 18<sup>th<\/sup> of February, <strong>Thomas Cook India Limited <\/strong>was born. The Rs.10\/- share was <strong>oversubscribed 21 times<\/strong>.\u00a0 It was the <strong>first company<\/strong> in Thomas Cook\u2019s history to have equity participation with the general public.\u00a0 After the \u201cIndianisation\u201d, Thomas Cook overseas owned 40%, the State Bank of India 15%, the employees 4.7% and the general public 40.3%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1987: \u00a0<\/strong>The commemoration of the 100<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary of Queen Victoria\u2019s Golden Jubilee. A special \u201c<strong>Empress of India<\/strong>\u201d tour culminated in a Victorian Ball in Delhi, with great pomp and show, for 203 British Tourists who had come with their ball gowns and tuxedos, specially for the occasion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1989: <\/strong>On the 21<sup>st<\/sup> of March, <strong>Thomas Cook India became automated, <\/strong>and got its first computers.\u00a0 The IT department was opened by Colin Pettit- Director<strong>, <\/strong>UK. The<strong> Data General<\/strong> machine known as the PCS.4000 was installed.\u00a0 It could support 64 terminals, but started with just 32 terminals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1990:<\/strong>\u00a0 We went <strong>On-Line <\/strong>on 2<sup>nd<\/sup> April.\u00a0 Robert Stanton, Head of Project Support &amp; Control, Information Technology-TC UK, came down specially to inaugurate it.\u00a0 The average time per contact was reduced from 15 minutes to 5 minutes, at the Head Office!\u00a0 We were the <strong>first travel company in India<\/strong> <strong>to computerize all its operations from any given location<\/strong>. New software application for FE, Travel, Tours and CAO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1999:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>1<sup>st<\/sup> January, the <strong>birth of the Euro<\/strong>, the advent of a single currency to be used by 11 countries of the European Union.\u00a0 <strong>Thomas Cook India was ready<\/strong> <strong>on the very first day<\/strong> to issue the currency and the travellers cheques.\u00a0 Our first transaction was on 4<sup>th<\/sup> January!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>2000:\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>5<sup>th<\/sup> January, we launch our own <strong>website,\u00a0 <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thomascook.co.in\">www.thomascook.co.in<\/a> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>2001:\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>Thomas Cook AG worldwide changed the famous red and white logo to the blue and gold one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>2006: \u00a0Thomas Cook India<\/strong> celebrated the <strong>125<sup>th<\/sup> \u00a0anniversary<\/strong> of Thomas Cook\u2019s existence in India, with many special events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These are just a few of the moments that we recorded and shared with our staff and clients through the years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Why \u201cPULSE\u201d?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As you know, we had a competition asking our staff to suggest an appropriate name and \u201c<strong>PULSE<\/strong>\u201d was the winner. \u00a0It is\u00a0symbolic in many ways. Right from birth, our \u2018pulse\u2019 is the rhythm of life.\u00a0 Just as Thomas Cook India has evolved from a single company to a global player, similarly, the \u201cTidings\u201d has metamorphosed\u00a0from a humble 4-page newsletter to\u00a0\u201cPULSE\u201d&#8211; an online magazine that\u00a0will incorporate inputs from\u00a0all the new companies of the Thomas Cook Group. It will reflect the rhythm of our company; the &#8216;heartbeat&#8217;&#8211; its news, its achievements, its progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>How would you define the role of the new magazine, and are you happy about the new avatar?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With the world going digital, digital publishing is the future, so our new on-line version can be accessed on a PC, a laptop or a smart phone, with a format to suit every device. It is there for you with just a click. We hope you will enjoy the new version. We also aspire\u00a0to improve with each edition, and look forward to suggestions and feedback. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The role of the magazine is to promote, through this informal medium, bonding between the staff. \u2026sharing news and information across all our companies and businesses.. In times of change, \u201c<strong>PULSE<\/strong>\u201d will be a reassuring and sturdy anchor, a beacon that keeps the flow of communication going, and giving each employee a sense of belonging, loyalty and pride. \u00a013th.
